NEW WORKSHOP THE OLD BARN, HYDE FARM BEACONSFIELD
26th July 2010 Refurbishment work on our new workshop is progressing well – twelve weeks into a sixteen week schedule. The Old Barn is a listed building, and so all the work is a careful balance of restoration of a beautiful building, and modernisation in order to be suitable for our use. We aim to occupy the Barn in October, and there will be a new picture of progress on this page every week until then. This will be the view from the main bench area. The outbuilding is the 'Granary', where we will store offcuts and pelleted wood waste over the summer months for burning in our new heating system in the winter.
An informal initial meeting allows us to discuss your ideas and requirements, and gives you the opportunity to look through my portfolios for further inspiration from our previous work. It also gives me the chance to see where the furniture is to live, take some initial measurements and pick up ideas from the surroundings. We will also discuss preferred design styles and timber types, and a budget and timescale for us to work to. (If you are working with an interior designer, they may join in the discussion too.)
I will put all this information together in my designs, and will return to see you with illustrations, wood samples, sometimes even scale models, and an outline costing. At this stage I welcome your input and comments – the furniture must be exactly as you want it - and our finished design will result.
Your deposit secures a place in our schedule, and once your commission is in progress you are more than welcome to visit the workshop to meet the cabinetmaker and see your piece(s) being made.
Your finished work is delivered personally by myself and the cabinetmaker(s) involved in its creation
I opened my first workshop in 1990 – just me, a bench, some tools, bundles of youthful optimism and a profound passion for furniture design and craftsmanship. Not much has changed (except, inevitably, the ‘youthful’ part), and nowadays I have a team of exceptional craftsmen managed in the workshop by David Hancock and an efficient office run by Heather Jackson.
My role remains to design all the furniture that we produce, and to continue to make pieces such as time allows.
We are proud to have won many awards and accolades for our work over the years including eight ‘Guildmark’ awards from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, and most notably the Claxton-Stevens Prize in 1995.
In 2003 I was extremely thrilled to be awarded an honourary Master of Arts Degree by Buckingamshire Chilterns Universty College for ‘exceptional achievements in furniture design and cabinet making’.
We are as happy to make a small keepsake box as we are to furnish an entire house, and our clients are spread across the UK as well as abroad. We often work in happy collaboration with Interior Designers and Architects, and we are fully CAD proficient.
